Japanese Language Learning

Summary: The Digital Corps provided expertise on updating existing material and preparing it for use on the latest technology. Employees worked closely with Dr. Guohe Zheng, a Professor of Japanese at Ball State University, to update a website that was used to help students learn Japanese. Through collaboration with Dr. Zheng, the Corps was able to gather the necessary assets and quickly create an end-product.

Helping Students Learn New Skills

To learn a new language, an individual must first understand the alphabet. Since the Japanese alphabet is so different from a Latin alphabet, students who embark on the journey to learn Japanese face a huge obstacle.

To address this problem and to help students on campus learn the Japanese alphabet more effectively, the Digital Corps collaborated with Dr. Zheng to update an existing digital tool to help students in the Japanese program study and engage with the language. Visual and audio components from the original website were used to update the end product. Constant communication ensured that assets were properly transferred.

Digital tools to engage students

To effectively learn the Japanese language, students need to be exposed to audio and visual cues. For this reason, the website incorporated visual animations of Japanese script brushstrokes, audio representations of character sounds, as well as visual cues to help students remember the character itself.

In the end, the Digital Corps delivered:

Client Communication and Collaboration

This project incorporated a high level of communication and collaboration with Dr. Zheng at Ball State to ensure that specifics surrounding the intricacies of teaching Japanese were effectively communicated to the students. Additionally, the Corps leveraged the knowledge of student employees who studied Japanese to act as client liaisons and validate the accuracy of visual and audio assets.
